Sattriya Dance

About the Dance form:

  • Sattriya arts in the form of literature, dance, music, drama and the crafts of manuscripts and masks and other handicrafts of use are the true representatives of Assam’s culture in addition to its folk arts of the different communities.
  • The tales of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata were rendered into Assamese verse at the sattras giving rise to a genre of plays called Ankiya Naats.
  • The Charit Puthis of the Vaishnava saints are the first biographical works in Assamese.
  • It was Haribilas Agarwalla who first printed the Kirtan and others followed.
  • The declaration of Sattriya dance as a major Indian dance form in 2000 ushered in a new beginning for Sattriya dance and music.
