India selected as the Non- Permanent Member for the term 2021-2022.
It is Eighth term of India as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
There are 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members in UNSC.
5 permanent members - China, France, Russian Federation, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
10 non-permanent members are elected by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Non-permanent members are elected for 2-years term.
A country needs to secure the votes of two-thirds of the members present and voting at the UNGA session 10 seats are distributed among the regions of the world:
5 seats for African and Asian countries ( 3 Africa & 2 for Asia).
1 for Eastern European countries
2 for Latin American and Caribbean countries; and
2 for Western European and Other Countries.
